administrators are available for open house and assistance >> there has been some confusion about whether teachers are being paid during the strike. they are not paid by the school board during a strike. and they do not receive a stipend, commonly referred to as 'strike pay', from the union. however, teachers can make up some lost pay-- if the school board adds instructional days to the school calendar next summer. chicago parents are making their voices heard in the education discussion. they have created a new organization called "chicago students first." the group says it's a network for parents to advocate on behalf their children. besides resolution of the teachers strike, the group also wants parents to weigh in on city-wide educational initiatives. interested parents can register online at: chicago students first .org students at lake forest high school are back in class today while their teachers remain outside on the picket line. the school board announced administrators, substitutes and volunteers will temporarily teach. the school board and teachers

union resumed negotiations this morning. teachers went on strike last wednesday over benefits and proposed restructuring of the salary schedule. teachers from chicago and several northern suburbs joined lake forest teachers to support their cause. teachers in north suburban highland park could hit the picket lines by mid-october. the teachers union says talks have reached an impasse. the school board is proposing to freeze teachers pay for two years. other issues include raises teachers receive for completing coursework and pre-retirement pay incentives. teachers have already agreed to health insurance changes which include higher premiums and co- pays. the average teacher pay in the district was reported at more than $70,000 last year. a teenager from hillside will appear in federal court this afternoon- charged with plotting to set off a car bomb outside a downtown bar. wgn's marcella raymond has details from the south loop: federal up authorities say that

a suicide bomber drove his car into a security checkpoint in baghdad this morning killing seven people and wounding two dozen others. it happened at the entrance of baghdad's green zone during rush hour. the u.s. and british embassies are located there. no group has claimed responsibility yet. it is not clear whether this attack is related to other embassy attacks during this past week. and four more american troops were killed by afghan security officers yesterday. it was the latest in a wave of so-called, "green on blue" attacks. in the midst of growing anti- american protests in muslim

nations, afghan security officers turned their guns on four americans. two other american troops were killed saturday in the helmend province. on friday, afghan insurgents wore american uniforms to break into the base where britain's prince harry is stationed. the prince was not injured. and in pakistan, hundreds of protestors broke through a barricade near the u.s. consulate yesterday. police used tear gas and water cannons to push the protestors back, as they reached the outer wall of the consulate. one demonstrator was killed during the clash. more than a dozen others were injured. no americans were injured. president obama is focusing on the impact of the auto industry bailout, as he campaigns today in the key swing state of ohio. in cincinnati.. he made the case the auto bailout is fueling economic recovery in ohio. >>when they said that we should walk away from an industry that supports one out of eight jobs here in ohio ... i said that we

trial of christopher vaughn.. who's charged with the murders of his wife and children. vaughn is accused of shooting and killing his family five years ago. but defense lawyers are trying to prove that vaughn's wife, kimberly, shot her husband and children before taking her own life. they're focusing on two drugs found in kimberly vaughn's system.. an antidepressant and an anti-seizure medication. defense attorneys say the fda has warned both drugs can lead to an increased risk of suicide.

chicago police are looking for the woman who slashed the face of another woman last night on the city's northwest side. the attack occurred around nine p-m on the 2400 block of north lorel. police say the two women were arguing, when one pulled out a knife and slashed the other woman across the face... then stabbed her in the abdomen and back before fleeing the scene. the victim was taken to loyola university medical center in maywood where she is in stable condition. an autopsy shows flesh-eating bacteria caused the death of an illinois prison inmate. 32 year-old robert turner died friday in a hospital where he was being treated for several illnesses, including cirrhosis of the liver. an autopsy shows he died from blood poisoning and necrotizing fasciitis-- the so-called flesh- eating bacteria. turner was on a medical furlough from the dixon correctional center.. where he was serving a 40 year sentence for killing a chicago man during a 1998 home invasion. a community alert has been issued for the morgan park neighborhood, after an increase of robberies in the area. the robberies took place on august 27th in the 1600 block of west 47th street and on september 14th in the 5100 block of south ashland.

in these incidents, the suspect asks the victim for a cigarette then walks behind the victim, puts an unknown object to the victim's back, and robs them. anyone with information is asked to call police. a local catholic group wants parishioner input on who should replace francis cardinal george when he retires. the cardinal is currently being treated for his second battle with cancer. he has not said when he will step down. but the group "voices of the faithful" is accepting ideas for a new cardinal online. they say it fulfills a centuries old tradition where the faithful express their needs. but the archdiocese is telling its priests not to advertise this campaign in their bulletins. putting your phone number on the "do not call" list doesn't mean you'll avoid telemarketers. the federal trade commission is getting more complaints about unwanted phone solicitations. most complaints are about robocalls, where a recording tries to sell you a product like credit cards and lower interest rates. these calls are cheap to make,
